NH IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) and Young Professionals (YP)

Overlaps in interests and leadership here in New Hampshire have caused us to operate our WIE and YP affinity groups on a joint basis. Both are associated with international parts of IEEE which can be found at these links:  WIE and YP. This group combines fun activities, networking, professional development activities (typically in conjunction with the NH PACE (professional activities group) and of course participants are encouraged to attend the technical and professional activities of our other NH groups.

Here are some of the recent WIE/YP activities:

2017 Oct: IEEE NH Women in Engineering and Young Professionals Fall Hike

We hiked Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness NH. The trail rises from the shores of Squam Lake. A short 1 mile hike takes hikers up to the ledges on the top of the West Rattlesnake Mountain overlooking the lake. The views were breathtaking. Fall colors were just about at their peak and the weather cooperated perfectly. NH IEEE Women in Engineering hike to Rattlesnake Mountain

The trail is maintained by Squam Lake Association. At the trail head a young man met us and told us all about the trail and how his organization maintains the trail. He asked everybody to take one rock up the trail to help carry materials for maintenance and erosion repair. It was heartwarming to see everybody, even small children hike with rocks in their hands.

From the West Rattlesnake ledges, we hiked to the East Rattlesnake Mountain. We had lunch and snacks on top of the mountain. From there we completed the loop and came down back to the parking lot. Everybody had a great time and we all got a nice healthy work out.

Seminar Series

Last spring WIE/ YP together with NCC IEEE Students Branch hosted a technical seminar presented by Jim Isaak.  The seminar was titled “Spies, Lies and Sunken Subs – a glimpse into the cold war”.  Students gathered to listen to a technical presentation.  Pizza was served.  At NCC we stay after the presentation and talk directly to the speaker in a more relaxed setting.  This is a very interesting and valuable addition to the seminar.  We talk about jobs in the industry and opportunities for our students.  In the seminar series we have a range of speakers from world famous distinguished lecturers to local industry and academic leaders.
