UNH Durham Student Chapter Meeting — Hardware and Software for Tracking Trucks in Private Fleets

November 29, 2017 @ 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: UNH Durham Student Chapter

Private trucking fleets move goods short distances (less than 200 miles in a day) from a central location to satellite locations.  The goods moved can be anything:  food, baked goods, fuel, liquified gas.  Moving those goods can be expensive.  Semi-trailer trucks gulp fuel.  Delays creep in due to traffic or breakdowns.  Local regulations change, forcing drivers to change habits or face fines.  Drivers need to maintain accurate logs or incur fines in the tens of thousands of dollars per infraction for their employer.

Software and hardware combined together form a system that trucking companies can use to boost fuel efficiency, improve fleet safety, eliminate fines due to inaccurate driver logs.  In addition, such a system can eliminate other sources of inefficiency.

In this talk, Ed Nelson will discuss how such a system works.  I will highlight how custom and OTS hardware was used with software to create a system that kept private fleets running as efficiently as possible.
