Hacking people – Why Social Engineering works?
Southern New Hampshire University SETA and IEEE Student Branch in collaboration with NH Women in Engineering and Young Professionals held its monthly February seminar on Wednesday Feb 15th. The topic was “Hacking people – Why Social Engineering works?”. As the Cybersecurity concerns keep growing, we need to educate everybody on what work and how to defend yourself against many common social engineering tricks. The speaker was professor Kurek who is currently working full time in the industry as the Senior Threat Hunter and Incident Responder for Eversource and as a Cyber Operations Planner for the Army National Guard. He brings with him many years of experience and many relevant certifications such as CISM, CISSP, GCIH, GCIA, GCFE, GPEN, CCNA, CCNA Security, Cisco CyberOps, ITIL, CompTIA A+, Project+, Network+, Security+, FEMA COOP Planning and Trainer, FEMA Community Cyber Exercise Planning.
Students were eager to learn what information you can share and what you have to be careful about some of the areas were surprising and audience did not expect the results. Professor Kurek shared many stories about hackers manipulating other to get a physical access to different company assets. The talk generated a lot of interest. Students are looking forward to learning more details about Cybersecurity in their CS331 Cybersecurity class as well as in planned future SNHU Cybersecurity offerings.
