Electric underground distribution system is generally more reliable than overhead because it is not exposed to the severe weather events round the year. However, it is still prone to failures from corrosion, mechanical issues, animal intrusion to name a few. While the number of failures is typically much less the duration of outages are much longer when compared to that for overhead. What is the best approach to minimize impact of an outage? Automate and implement FLISR system wide or retrofit monitoring or do both? In this presentation we will examine the various approaches. Wicked STEM is a new event to cultivate and sustain the interest of the region’s youth in STEM education and careers by providing a face-to-face experience where they will learn, engage and connect with local experts. High school and college students from Northern New England will explore the different disciplines of STEM to help them formalize their education plans while discussing careers and internships with participating companies. Hands on activities will be available for a range of ages from elementary through high school. IEEE and other STEM related organizations from Northern New England will convene at Wicked STEM to showcase their products, provide hands on STEM activities, and network with the future workforce.
